Our Martial Art of Tang Soo Do is packed full of so many etiquette (manners) rules that this article space will not begin to do the topic any justice.

However, let’s at least start with a few basic etiquette tips that will help you to potentially avoid embarrassment or even at times push ups.

Greeting – Junior Rank should always initiate the bow between junior and senior rank. Upon arrival at the dojang, always bow to the Master Instructor then the senior Black Belts.

Social Settings – Before eating, patiently wait for the Senior Rank to begin eating.

Entering the Office – Removing your shoes before entering the office area displays your respect.

By carefully examining etiquette, we find respect is at the root of it all. When in doubt show respect through your bow, patience to eat or by simply removing your shoes. One’s etiquette speaks volumes of their training and character.

SLOW DOWN TO GO FASTER!

Slow-motion kicking forces the leg muscles and core muscles to work harder throughout the execution of each kick. This exercise can be performed with most kicks in Tang Soo Do. For example, the traditional front kick (ahp cha gi) can be executed as a slow-motion exercise.

To practice this exercise, one knee is lifted and the leg slowly extended forward. After the leg has been extended, slowly return it to a bent position. At least eight repetitions and three sets of this exercise should be performed with each leg.

To improve balance, each consecutive kick should be practiced without touching the kicking foot to the floor. Remember the saying, slow down to go faster. This exercise will help you get there! Good luck on improving your kicks!
