Smile

Growing up, I was exposed to some of the best comedy teams of all time. They include Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, the Marx Brothers, 3 Stooges and my all time favorite is Charlie Chaplin.

For many of my younger readers, Charlie Chaplin’s early movies were in black and white and without sound. He was a master of communicating through his expressions, mannerisms, and physical comedy. In addition to being a talented actor, he was an equally talented musician.

A song that he wrote that has been a source of personal inspiration through the years is Smile. It’s a wonderful reminder to keep smiling though the tough times.

Smile, though your heart is aching
Smile, even though it’s breaking
When there are clouds in the sky
You’ll get by…
If you smile
With your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile if you’ll just…
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what’s the use of crying?
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile
If you’ll just…
If you smile
With your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile
If you’ll just Smile…
That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what’s the use of crying
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile
If you’ll just Smile.

When life’s storms come your way, remember to just smile.
