Ways to Cope With Stress
Taking care of ourselves has never been more important than now. Stress levels are high, and we need to manage them for our well being. Here are a few tips from the CDC to help keep all of us moving in the right direction.
*Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting.
*Take care of your body.
Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate
Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals.
Exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep.
*Make time to unwind. Try to do some activities you enjoy.
*Connect with others. Talk with people you trust about your concerns and how you are feeling.
Hope
With all the havoc that’s in our world, it’s hard to find hope. Do we just give up? Of course NOT!
Here are a few tips to help us keep pushing forward
- Write It Down – make a list of things that you can do to help yourself. Having a clear picture gives us direction and hope.
- Acts of Kindness – this impacts our mood and attitude in a major way. We feel connection. Do it daily.
- Avoid Stinking Thinking – monitor your self talk. When you find yourself going down the slippery slope, watch a funny show, do a kind deed, listen or read something that is uplifting.
Feel your emotions, but let them go. Don’t lose hope. When the sun goes down, the stars come out.
Health Care Tips
We all have been feeling a bit stressed due to what’s happening in our world. Below are a few helpful health tips from the experts at the Mayo Clinic.
Physical health:
- Fuel your body by eating a healthy, well-balanced diet and drinking plenty of water.
- Aim to get seven to eight hours of sleep each night.
- Exercise every day.
- Take deep breaths and stretch often.
- Avoid risky or destructive behaviors, such as abusing alcohol or drugs, excessive gambling or ignoring public health recommendations.
- Spend time outside, such as going for a walk in the park, but follow social distancing guidelines.
Mental health:
- Set and maintain a routine at home.
- Focus on things you can control.
- Use technology to maintain social connections with your loved ones. Consider a regular check-in schedule to give you something to look forward to.
- Focus your thoughts on the present and things to be grateful for today.
- Listen to music or read books.
- Consume reliable news sources that report facts, and avoid media that sensationalizes emotions. Limit your exposure or take a break from news and social media if you find that it makes you anxious.
- Lean on your personal beliefs and faith for support.
- Look for ways to help your community, such as blood donations, checking on older people in your neighborhood, or donating supplies or money to local organizations.
- Acknowledge and appreciate what others are doing to help you and your community.
Gratitude
When starting your day, try starting with an attitude of Gratitude. Focusing on the people and things we’re thankful for really helps us to stay positive and hopeful.
I am thankful for my… family, health, day, life, etc It’s easy to focus on what we are not thankful for. Right? As the old saying goes, where our focus goes our energy flows.
So where do you want you energy to go? Take control of your attitude with Gratitude. It’s a great place to start and finish your day. Make a list of all the things that you are grateful and read it throughout your day. Especially when the stinking thinking starts to creep in our minds.
By the way, if you haven’t heard it today. I am thankful for you.
One Step at a Time
I can venture to say that we are all familiar with the famous Chinese Philosopher Lao Tzu’s quote,”The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”OK great you may say. I don’t need fortune cookie riddles thrown at me during this pandemic. Got it. But, hear me out though.
Do most mornings feel like you are headed out on another thousand mile journey? Lots of unknown territory and wow we shouldn’t have packed so much baggage (i.e. anger, fear, anxiety). This journey through this pandemic is and has been scary. Trying to stay strong, keep our families spirits up, doing the work and not falling victim to the circumstances is exhausting.
Try starting each day with a single step, then another, then another. Pack only the essentials (i.e. love, hope, strength) each morning and set out on your journey. When it feels like you can’t go any further, just remember to focus on one step at a time. Look around and see that we are in this journey together. You can do it!
Kindness
The other day, I was on a supply run for some essential items. Honestly, I felt like I was in an episode of the Walking Dead. While keeping my appropriate distance, a gentlemen in front of me had checked out but then had forgotten to get something.
I could clearly see that he was frazzled. It would have been easy for me to tell him off and let him know that he just needed to go to the back of the line. Fortunately, I chose kindness over being right.
The gentleman, apologized several times. I told him that it was perfectly fine. It was really okay. Hopefully, the kindness displayed will continue to be passed on and on.
Let’s face it. Our patience is thin and kindness can be the last thing on our mind. I must confess that when I chose kindness, I felt wonderful and very empowered. Give kindness a try. It’s free.
